“People are worried that the models right now are not sustainable,” said Jackie Friedman, executive director of the Martha’s Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative. The collaborative counsels and works with the hundreds of nonprofits around the Island. “Many nonprofits experienced disruption in grants and funding in the spring. The uncertainty and changes to predictability in funding streams forced many nonprofits to diversify funding streams, creating more local events, and looking to local grants and donors to support sustainability.”

'Disrupting Unconscious Bias' Workshop

The Martha’s Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative is hosting a free online workshop titled “Five Strategies for Disrupting Your Unconscious Bias.” Linda Jenkins from the Jenkins Consulting Group will cover the fundamentals of unconscious bias, including its definition and characteristics. Participants will explore tools for identifying their unconscious bias, strategies for disrupting it, and methods to apply this awareness in the workplace.

This session is especially beneficial for leaders aiming to foster organizations that enhance innovation, creativity, productivity, engagement, and relationships. Participants will learn five strategies to disrupt their unconscious biases: recognize and accept that we all have them, increase awareness of our unconscious biases, practice individuation instead of categorization, practice perspective-taking, and engage in counterstereotyping. Kane will address how your organization and you as an individual can ensure you are thinking about LGBTQ inclusion year-round, and keep the momentum going long after Pride Month ends. Participants will learn practical takeaways in human resources, marketing, and communications, client services, and community collaboration for organizations seeking to be leaders in queer inclusion. "How do you age with grace? This is the question facing one in three Martha’s Vineyard full-time residents, who are more than 65 years of age. As most of us know, age is a funny thing. Depending on one’s health and a myriad of life circumstances — from job fulfillment and retirement finances to the health and richness of the relationships one has — one can be 80 and feel young or 60 and feel old. That said, no matter how one feels, one thing is true: As we age, at some point we will need help. It might be small. A railing to get down the stairs might suddenly be a necessary home feature. It might be big. Driving might no longer be possible, or a partner might have died sooner than expected, and one is stuck with a big house and bigger expenses. No matter what, Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard (HAMV) works to fill the gaps and offer support services to ensure that aging Islanders can live the healthiest, most enriched life possible."

The West Chop Community Fund Announces its 2022-2023 Grant Application, Review and Awards Procedures

The West Chop Community Fund partners with the lead non-profit organizations on Martha's Vineyard that are addressing key "unmet needs" on the Island.

The WCCF awards grants to eligible non-profit organizations whose work in the community is focused on one or more of the following seven areas of need:

Affordable Housing
Children’s Health, Welfare, and Recreation
Clean Water
Education and Workforce Development
Food Security
Health & Aging
Substance Abuse Counseling or other related support services.

To Apply:

The WCCF's grant making authority is limited to registered, non-profit organizations operating on Martha's Vineyard. If your organization is an active 501 (c) (3), is working in the relevant areas of need on the Island, and would like to submit a grant application, please refer to the linked guidelines and the WCCF website, which contains the WCCF Grant Application, guidelines and related information. Applications must be submitted no later than November 30, 2022 to be considered for grants to be awarded in late spring or early summer 2023. Applicants are encouraged to submit their application as early as possible ahead of the November 30th deadline.

MVNC Welcomes Three New Board Members

To continue to meet the wide range of issues and capacity needs for Island nonprofits, MVNC has appointed three new Board of Directors, Diana Barrett, Ann Smith, and Eileen Nugent. All come with Island connections and years of experience serving nonprofits nationwide.

Diana Barrett brings a resume of nonprofit experience to her post and a keen interest in how nonprofit organizations can collaborate and work more effectively together. Diana retired from a distinguished career at Harvard University, where she taught at both the School of Public Health and Harvard Business School.

She has extensive experience working with organizations worldwide to help solve social problems related to diversity, sustainable housing, and health care. Active with a wide range of Island issues and organizations, including Vineyard House, Community Services, Sheriff's Meadow, and IGI, Diana is a founding member of MV Youth and sits on an Advisors Group at the Island Housing Trust. Diana lives in Chilmark and Florida.

Ann Smith is the Executive Director of Featherstone Center for the Arts, the year-round community arts center providing gallery shows, events and art classes, and workshops for youth and adults on Martha’s Vineyard. She also serves as Chair of the Board of the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) and is the Chair of the Arts Martha’s Vineyard steering committee. She has received numerous awards for her successful leadership including the Massachusetts Tourism Award, Massachusetts (May 2015); the Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard Creative Living Award for noteworthy contributions in the Vineyard’s arts, culture, and community life and significantly improving the quality of life on the Island (November 2015) and the MV Museum’s Martha’s Vineyard Medal which recognizes outstanding commitment to preserving the history, arts, and culture of Martha’s Vineyard (August 2018).

Eileen Nugent cares deeply about nonprofits' role and value and how she can help them improve their value to their constituents and ultimately to the Vineyard. Eileen recently retired as a senior partner at the Skadden law firm in New York City. Recognized as one of the most skilled Mergers and Acquisitions lawyers globally, Eileen excels in navigating and resolving conflict-of-interest situations. Her years of experience dealing with nonprofits' financial and policy issues include her role as Vice-Chair of the Hospital Fund Board at the Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. She also sits on the Board of Trustees of Brooklyn Law School. The treasurer of her community association on the Vineyard, Eileen lives in Chilmark and New York City.

A new food equity partnership! Island Grown merges with Island Food Pantry

We are writing to share some exciting news about an upcoming change that will transform and strengthen the Island’s support resources for those who face food insecurity, and enable us to build a stronger, more integrated food equity infrastructure.

The Island Food Pantry (The Pantry) and Island Grown Initiative (IGI) will merge our organizations by the end of the year to:

• broaden our reach to underserved communities

• reduce barriers to access

• partner with health care providers to promote wellness and disease prevention through education and access to nutritious food

The Island’s dependence on seasonal employment and the high cost of living cause many to struggle to make ends meet, particularly in the off-season. Now, the health crises created by Covid-19 and the resulting economic distress and insecurity have left many more island residents in challenging circumstances.

Through our work, we meet many people suffering from food insecurity – neighbors, colleagues, and friends who cannot dependably get enough healthy, affordable food to survive and thrive. We hear their stories and feel their anxiety.

Everyone we serve has unique needs. To that end, we plan to create a client-centered food equity system, one that offers the right food to the right people at the right time.

Our approach will emphasize the efficiencies and economic benefits of individual choice by innovating new models for food distribution, designing systems that better reflect the values and habits of those we serve. The result? Better planning, healthier clients, less food waste.

The coronavirus pandemic and its effects on our community have drawn attention to the need for better inte-gration and coordination among the island’s diverse food resource providers. Without a strong infrastructure, there are substantial gaps in the delivery system and inefficiencies at a time of great need. Paradoxically, this challenge presents our organizations with a timely opportunity to pivot, adapt, and improve.

Combining our organizations will offer greater efficiency to:

• grow produce

• rescue food

• prepare meals for home distribution

• offer summer food service

• operate a mobile market

• distribute groceries, meat, and fish directly to those in need

The Pantry and IGI began discussions this winter on how to unite our efforts. After thoughtful discussions and rigorous due diligence, our boards of directors voted unanimously to merge the two organizations, effective January 1, 2021.

The Pantry will become a separate program within IGI, with its own budget, and will maintain its name, mission, and brand. Kayte Morris will become a Senior Director at IGI, reporting to Rebecca Haag, IGI’s Executive Director. Three members of The Pantry’s board of directors will join the IGI board in January.

Until the merger takes effect on January 1, 2021, the two agencies will operate independently while jointly developing a new model for a client-centric delivery system and collaborating with other providers to build a robust, effective food equity hub.

The Institute for Nonprofit Practice has created a new initiative to support all nonprofits to have access to the award winning Leadership Program, that has graduated 19 Island nonprofits.

The Tomorrow Fund, a movement to help nonprofit and community leaders, especially leaders of color, rebuild, reimagine, and restore as they navigate the monumental challenges that lie ahead.

The Emergency Fund seeks to shore up the invaluable role of Island non-profits when crisis hits, whether it’s today’s public health emergency or future crisis facing the Vineyard from natural disasters to financial. The fund is immediately established with $25,000 from existing sources with the hope and expectation that donors will build upon that modest base.

Are you an Executive Director or emerging nonprofit leader who is looking to sharpen your professional skills, build confidence, and gain resources to be a stronger leader of your organization and community?

Applications now open for the 2020/2021 class of The Institute for Nonprofit Practice (INP) Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership.

This intensive 8-month program from INP is part of Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University.

Designed to give you the tools to build your organization’s effectiveness innovation, and sustainability, INP is made accessible by the MVNC and local funders through scholarships and locally held classes.

Leaders representing all nonprofit sectors from 19 different organizations have participated in and benefited from the Vineyard program to date.

Jackie Friedman Is New MVNC E.D.

Join us to welcome Jackie Friedman, Psy.D as MVNC's new Executive Director.

The Martha’s Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative Board of Directors is pleased to announce the hiring of Jackie Friedman, Psy.D., of Edgartown, as its new Executive Director. Jackie takes the place of long-time Executive Director Peter Temple, who retired in December. She will begin work with us in March.

Jackie brings a wealth of experience and know-how to the job. In her prior roles in hospital, government, nonprofit and private sector behavioral and mental health program work, Jackie has developed impressive strengths in strategic and project management, keen creative problem-solving ability, and compassion and sensitivity in working with others. Her many roles have benefited from her skills in working collaboratively across many organizations. As one of her references noted, “Jackie has a unique set of skills in both getting things done well and doing them in ways that build trust across work units she did not often have responsibility for. Uncommon in today’s complex and fast-moving world”

We feel extremely fortunate to have found someone of her ability to lead us in our continued work to help strengthen the island’s nonprofit community.

Jackie is married and is raising two young children on the Vineyard. She currently serves as Chair of the Vineyard Montessori School Board of Directors and sits on the Family Center Advisory Committee in Vineyard Haven. We feel sure that Jackie’s commitment to the Martha’s Vineyard community and to the long-term development of our nonprofit community will serve both our organization and the island well in the years to come.

We ask that the Vineyard community join us in welcoming Jackie as Executive Director of the Martha’s Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative and in offering her its unreserved support in her new role.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS for new Community Impact Grant.
Martha's Vineyard Bank Charitable Foundation has started a new Community Impact Grant that looks to reward Martha's Vineyard or Falmouth nonprofits that have had a large impact on their community in the past year.

How to apply:

Nominate your nonprofit organization. Complete the application for MVB about why your nonprofit organization deserves a $2,500 Community Impact Grant in 500 words or less. You can also add an optional video URL to improve the presentation.
Ask your community to Vote for you. Voting will be February 18 - March 10. The nominations will be posted on the MVB website.

The Martha's Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative's Holiday Wish List for Island Nonprofits is a great way to tell donors about the things your organization needs for the year to come. The Wish List will be published in MVNC's Year in Review Newsletter, and inserted in both the Martha’s Vineyard Times and the Vineyard Gazette in early December.

The reach of our Holiday Wish List is tremendous, and has generated gifts ranging from $100 to over $10,000 for a variety of organizations over the years.

Three island nonprofits team up to promote sustainable 'green' practices at island events. This mission-based collaboration between Island Grown Initiative, Vineyard Conservation Society, and Sail MV aims to educate event planners and caterers on Martha's Vineyard on the importance of saying NO to plastic, preventing and recycling food waste, and how to operate in an environmentally responsible manner.

2019 Wish List!

Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center's list includes a new/used laser printer ($400), a Wintec air saddle ($800), $2,500 to repair & winterize their automatic horse waterers and $6,000 to pilot a program for teens & young adults struggling with addiction.

Sail MV is expanding its marine science program and wishes for a MiScope portable digital microscope so kids can zoom in on organisms without slides ($350), and a laptop for group viewing of the live specimens ($2,000).

MVYRADIO really wishes for a multi-function laser printer to replace one that just died ($1,600) and 6 LED office lamps for their full-time staff ($30 each).

Phyllis Vecchia Creative Drama wishes for $800 for the Women in History and Story Theatre Programs classes taught to 60 groups of Islanders of all ages last year.

Island Gymnastics would love $30,000 for a new HVAC system to replace a rusty 30 year old one and reduce heating costs. Also, a trampoline extension ($2,348) so taller teens and adults can use it.

Polly Hill Arboretum wishes for a golf cart ($7,200) like Polly used for tours, so mobility challenged visitors can finally enjoy the rustic paths and natural wonders.

Sassafras Earth Education hopes to plant 12 American Chestnut saplings ($600) to give students wild harvesting opportunities and yummy healthy snacks. Plus a rain cap to keep the tipi dry on very rainy days ($500).

Island Grown Initiative hopes to find a front loader in their stocking for mixing/moving compost to enrich Farm Hub soil ($50,000) and really need several large chest freezers for the food equity programs ($500 each).

ACE MV wishes for gift certificates from Educomp and Tisbury Printer ($250 each) to purchase supplies and printed materials about their classes and programs.

Vineyard Conservation Society wants every child on island to have their own high quality (not plastic!) reusable water bottle, and is looking for 250 ($5,000) of them for kids who can’t afford their own.

Dukes County Regional Housing Authority needs translation services ($500) to increase understanding and use of housing supports by Portuguese speaking Brazilian households.

The leaking sky lights were replaced but the Animal Shelter of MV now needs $1,000 to paint the walls and finish the redo of the kennel area and create a calm atmosphere for the dogs and improve their well-being.

Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary wants to be even greener and become a net zero energy consumer by adding solar panels ($50,000). Also $10,000 for an Osprey Cam so campers, students, and the world can view these iconic birds up close and personal.

BiodiversityWorks hopes to monitor snakes and bats in burrows or tree cavities with a flexible burrow scope and video recorder ($326). Also a spray on bed liner for their truck to prevent rust and help it last longer $1,000.

Island Elderly Housing needs a propane powered generator to provide back-up emergency power to the lighting system in Woodside Village 1, their largest building ($5,510).

As they continue their new program to make films about issues that affect our community, MV Film Festival Productions wishes for a camera, computer, and light kit to make these productions their best ($5,000).

Featherstone Center for the Arts needs at least 2 pottery wheels for their new Pottery Studio. It’s their most popular medium and they need more wheels to meet demand and replace worn ones ($1,400 each for large, of which they have none, $800 each for regular).

At the Island Food Pantry clients now choose what healthy, fresh and often local food they want, so they wish for 3 new shopping carts ($400), new produce bins to increase selection ($700), and $1,200 to revamp the entry way and check-in area for safety and efficiency.

MV Mediation dreams of a Dell XPS15 ($1,500). Their existing, well-aged laptop doesn’t support the State reporting system (requires Windows) or video conferencing they need for remote mediation.

The Cottagers work in the charming old, but not ADA compliant, Town Hall on Pequot Ave in O.B. so they hope for a lift to the second floor ($50,000) and ADA bathrooms ($40,000) for elder and disabled members and visitors.

Big Brothers Big Sisters has 10 Island boys waiting for mentors and hopes 10 Big Brothers appear during the Holidays. Also need $1,800 to recruit, screen, train and support each match for 1 year.

MV Children's Chorus wishes for 50 special sturdy student folders to hold and protect sheet music each semester ($488) and sponsors for their winter and spring concert accompanist ($1,000 each).

The Edgartown School Music Department needs 2 ipads ($660) so students with disabilities can access GarageBand to play digital instruments alongside their peers on real ones.

MV Playhouse wishes for a new or gently used b&w copier ($2,700) that prints double-sided, scans and networks, to replace a dead one and print scripts, programs and business documents. Plus a heavy duty paper shredder ($200).

All volunteer Community Radio station WVVY wishes to upgrade their 10+ year old technology with a new 12 channel broadcast console ($4,419), a Shure microphone ($399) and all the required cables ($200).

To keep animals comfortable on hot days at the fair the AG Society wants fans for the barns ($1,000). Plus $3,000 to buy the E-ticketing system piloted in 2018, to reduce lines and ease entry for the public, and $10,000 for safety fencing of the main driveway.

Getting rid of furniture? The Yard needs these for staff and artist use: 6-12 office and dining room chairs, 1 King bed frame, patio furniture and a Hammock. Plus 6 new twin mattresses/box springs for dancers to lay their heads ($1,000).

MV Network for Homeless Prevention seeks 6 annual VTA passes ($150 each) so the homeless can frequent Community Suppers, the Warming Center and Houses of Grace winter shelter. Plus VTA buses provide a place for the homeless to escape the cold.

The Marine and Paleobiological Research Institute wishes for a Staples desktop laminator (item 1668258, $150) so educational materials endure repeated student and public handling.

The Island Autism Group wishes for funds to expand their after-school programs and add counselors to allow more Drumming ($6,000), more Riding ($12,000) and more swimming ($2,500) per year. Plus extra staff for higher needs kids ($10,000 for each of 3 program groups per summer and school year.

Camp Jabberwocky wishes for a new adaptive van to carry campers around the island without breaking down in Aquinnah again ($50,000), camper scholarships ($1,450/wk) for those in need, and 2 new washing machines ($900 each) for the daily load of towels and clothes!

Habitat for Humanity hopes for a heavy-duty hand truck ($300) for moving appliances and building materials safely, a 40’ Valtran storage container ($5,500) for tools and materials at and between jobs, and a new portable generator ($850).

Second Chance Animal Rescue, a no kill shelter that finds for homes for homeless animals, seeks donations toward their spay and neuter program which spent $10,000 this year placing 140 cats and dogs.

African Artists Community Development Project seeks cash or in kind donations for an expert to help set up and market an online store selling dolls made by 12 Zambian women who support their families with the proceeds ($500).

Plum Hill, a Waldorf-inspired preschool, wishes for art supplies made from natural materials for children to express themselves in a safe environment ($2,000), and a year’s supply of daily nutritious organic snacks ($5,000).

Hospice of MV needs a laptop computer ($1,250) to help their Development Director implement a strategic plan for vital funding to support their growing client base, find prospects, maintain donor databases, write grants and more.

The more you mow the denser your fields will be, so The Field Fund desires 10 extra mows to make the 4 elementary school playing fields safer for kids ($1,000) and an Air2G2 machine to decrease compaction and increase drainage on all Island fields ($35,250).

The Vineyard Haven Library seeks funds to upgrade the young adult room into an attractive after school center for teens and tweens to hang, by replacing 15 year-old furniture ($4,500) and a 10 year old gaming system ($650).

Chamber Music Society seeks a concert sponsor(s) to complete their 2019 Summer Festival ($10,000) and funds for their Artist in Residence Program, which brings professional musicians to teach and play in the schools ($10,000).

Chilmark Community Center camp enrollment rose 26% this summer and 43% of the kids were year-round islanders who get 50% off tuition. They need local scholarships for next year: $100 sends a kid to camp for a week!

The Martha's Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing wishes for 2-nights of private lodging for visiting authors/poets in their Fall, Winter, and Spring workshops, plus full tuition fellowships ($1,000 each) for Island writers.

YMCA MV hopes to enhance the playground with a slide, climbing and balance structures to keep the kids active and fit ($10,000). Also want a Bathing Suit Dryer ($2,000) instead of using plastic bags for wet ones, and a water bottle refill station ($1,500) to replace the drinking fountain and promote the use of reusable water bottles.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services Daybreak Clubhouse wishes for $250 for a laptop projector. Daybreak provides psychosocial rehabilitation services for nearly 20 community members.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services Island Counseling Center wishes for $300 for a LED Message Board and/or TV for waiting room to communicate information to clients/community about community support groups, events, activities, and resources.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services Island Counseling Center wishes for $150 for non-slip rug runners for the counseling center to prevent slips and falls.
