Nonprofit Capacity Building

Helping Island nonprofits do their important work:

  • 4-6 Workshops & Events a year. Recent topics have included Governance, Board Development, Fundraising, Annual Campaigns, Planned Giving, Grant Writing, Building a Strong Board Chair-Executive Director Partnership, Marketing, Contingency Planning/Budgeted and more;
  • Biannual meetings exclusively for Executive Directors and Board Chairs to network, share ideas and learn from each other, with brief presentations on topics of interest;
  • Satellite program of the Tufts University Certificate Program in Nonprofit Management.  We have put together a program with classes to be held on the Vineyard and the Cape so nonprofits can offer professional leadership development opportunities to their top employees without having to travel. The program is run by the Institute for Nonprofit Practice, subsidized by Island Foundations to make the program accessible to Island nonprofits of all sizes;
  • Fundraising MV  for Island Development professionals. The informal 'brown bag lunches' offer the space to network, share ideas, learn from each other and recommend workshop topics to MVNC;
  • Consultation for Island nonprofits by our Executive Director and Board on Governance and operating issues, in addition to guidance on where to find resources or help;
  • Nonprofit Resource Center in partnership with the Oak Bluffs Library that features books/periodicals on all aspects of nonprofit operations and free access to a grant research database; GrantWatch
More information about the Center, GrantWatch and a complete list of the available materials can be found here.

Creating Collaboration

Expanding Island nonprofits ability to advance their shared goals and their individual missions we...

  • Foster collaboration in our capacity building efforts and salute great examples of it in our newsletter and outreach efforts;
  • Encourage those wanting to start new nonprofits to consider working with an existing nonprofit as a fiscal agent instead;
  • Act as a catalyst to create new collaborative initiatives to address Island wide issues and needs. Using the principles of Collective Impact we bring stakeholders together to explore common interests and how they night work together;
  • Share innovative models other communities have used to impact similar issues, and we identify grants or funding for planning or implementation;
  • Provide management support to get these new initiatives launched and sustainable.

  • Op-Eds for both Island newspapers to educate the community with commentary on nonprofit issues and accomplishments;
  • Serve as an authority on Island issues and the nonprofit community in newspaper articles and other media:
  • Host the online Nonprofit Directory for donors and others wanting to know more about Island nonprofits.
