The Community Preservation Act (CPA) enables Massachusetts communities to levy a surcharge on property tax bills to raise funds to expand their open space, historic, recreational, and affordable housing assets. These funds are then supplemented by a State match. The Community Preservation Committee helps develop and administer projects funded with CPA monies; it encourages participation from interested community members. All six island towns have adopted the CPA for their communities.

Each year the Foundation's Board of Directors requests submittals from all Vineyard non-profit organizations in need of help to fund their unique projects or programs. Traditionally, the Board does not fund salaries but gives special consideration to innovative approaches to problems or needs that cannot get funding through traditional sources. The Board does not award grants two years in a row to the same organization.
Applications are being accepted through October 30th.
Awarding grants to nonprofits that provide services to local residents is at the very core of Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation’s mission. Over the past 40+ years, we have awarded more than $19,000,000 to support projects and programs that offer creative solutions to emerging and persistent issues such as food and housing security, health services, environmental sustainability, and access for people of any ability.
Our annual competitive grant process, through which we award Community & Impact Grant funding, is critical to helping the Island community meet pressing needs and create systemic change. In 2025, we received funding requests of nearly $1,100,000 from nonprofits. Thanks to the generosity of past and current donors, we awarded a record $600,000 to 54 organizations serving the Island.
Applications are being accepted through 12 PM on Monday, September 28th.
