Our Story

The Martha's Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative (MVNC) supports the Island's 200+ nonprofits through leadership development, advocacy, and collaboration. We offer workshops, forums, and resources, while uniting organizations to share resources and amplify their impact. Founded in 2003, MVNC is the only organization dedicated to strengthening the Vineyard's nonprofit community.

Founded by a group on nonprofit board members interested in educating donors and supporting nonprofit collaboration, the organization quickly grew to encompass the capacity-building, networking, and educational opportunities that MVNC is best know for today. In 2017, the founders changed our name to Martha's Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative to better represent our growing mission.

Our Mission:

MVNC is an advocacy organization devoted to sustaining the Vineyard by strengthening its nonprofit community. We do this by:

  • Offering capacity building workshops and other services and resources;
  • Advocating for the nonprofit community, its contributions, and its needs;
  • Advocating for impact through collaboration and resource sharing;
  • Acting as a catalyst to create nonprofit and Island-wide collaborations that leverage their collective impact and sustainability.

Why We Support Martha's Vineyard Nonprofits:

They Sustain the Island

We Love

They Support Our Year-Round Community

They Need Critical Resources To Do Their Work

Nonprofits Sustain the Island We Love.

Almost everything we love about the Vineyard is protected, maintained or made possible by Island nonprofits. From protecting the beaches we relax on, to providing an event for a night out, to connecting us to our local agriculture and seafood, nonprofits are an integral part of daily life on the island. That’s why they are critical to sustaining the Island and its vibrant culture and life.

Nonprofits Support Our Year-Round Community.

Island nonprofits are critical to sustaining the Vineyard because they provide a safety net for the backbone of the island, our year round community. From housing, to childcare, to healthcare, nonprofits serve as an important provider and, at times, a safety net that sustains the Island’s year-round population. Its people are the heart of this place and without them the Vineyard wouldn’t be the Vineyard.

Nonprofits Need Resources to do Their Critical Work.

If Vineyard Nonprofits don’t have the resources they need to do their critical work, the Island we’ve all known and loved will lose much of its charm and character. Over half the nonprofits on Martha’s Vineyard have between 1 and 10 employees. With limited resources and growing programs, nonprofit staff and boards often find themselves going beyond the scope of their normal job descriptions. Executive Directors often find themselves playing the role of lead fundraiser, head accountant, human resources department, and marketing expert. MVNC is here to support nonprofit staff and boards with the professional development and leadership skills to succeed in their work, no matter the gaps.

Learn More About MVNC:

"The single biggest way to impact an organization is to focus on 'leadership development.’ There is almost no limit to  the potential of an organization that recruits good people, raises them all up as leaders and continually develops them.”
