Grants & Opportunities

The Sam Feldman Fund for the Long-Term Success of Island Nonprofits

Started in 2016, this fund is a collaborative effort between the Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation and the Martha’s Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative.  The Sam Feldman Fund is committed to continuing Sam's visionary work to create, expand, and advance nonprofits on Martha's Vineyard. The fund provides grants to build capacity through nonprofit board development, organizational training, and professional development.

Funded projects include hiring a consultant to work with the board on planning and development, education, team training and education, and team-building retreats.

Grant applications are viewed on a rolling basis.

GrantWatch

MVNC and the Oak Bluffs Public Library formed a free joint program called The Nonprofit Resource Center. The primary feature is GrantWatch, a comprehensive and easy-access online database of available grants. The Center also offers training on GrantWatch, grant writing, and research workshops, and has a reference section with over 60 publications for Board Members, Executive Directors, and Development Managers on a variety of nonprofit management topics including grant writing, fundraising, governance, and marketing.

The Resource Center and GrantWatch are made possible by a grant from the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation.

Community Preservation Act

The Community Preservation Act (CPA) enables Massachusetts communities to levy a surcharge on property tax bills to raise funds to expand their open space, historic, recreational, and affordable housing assets. These funds are then supplemented by a State match. The Community Preservation Committee helps develop and administer projects funded with CPA monies; it encourages participation from interested community members. All six island towns have adopted the CPA for their communities.

Farm neck foundation

Each year the Farm Neck Foundation's Board of Directors requests submittals from all Vineyard nonprofit organizations in need of help to fund their unique projects or programs. Traditionally, the Board does not fund salaries but gives special consideration to innovative approaches to problems or needs that cannot get funding through traditional sources. The Board does not award grants two years in a row to the same organization.

MVCF COmmunity & impact grants

Awarding grants to nonprofits that provide services to local residents is at the very core of Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation’s mission. Over the past 40+ years, they have awarded more than $19,000,000 to support projects and programs that offer creative solutions to emerging and persistent issues such as food and housing security, health services, environmental sustainability, and access for people of any ability.

Their annual competitive grant process, through which they award Community & Impact Grant funding, is critical to helping the Island community meet pressing needs and create systemic change. In 2024, MVCF received funding requests totaling just over $1,000,000 from 61 nonprofits. Thanks to the generosity of past and current donors, they were able to grant a record $530,000 to 46 organizations.
