Strategic Mergers

Strategic Continuity and the Legacy of Leadership

Presented by Curtis Strategy
for the Martha’s Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative

Wednesday, April 29 | 9:00 AM–11:00 PM | Virtual (Zoom)

MVNC is pleased to offer this half-day training designed to help nonprofit leaders build high-impact strategic partnerships and mergers while preserving mission integrity.

Founded in 2008, Curtis Strategy works collaboratively with organizations to align the right resources, design innovative strategies, and develop customized plans that support long-term growth and sustainability. Their expertise includes strategic planning, organizational design, succession planning, board governance, and merger and affiliation (M&A) strategy.

Session Overview

In an era defined by market consolidation and the power of strategic alliances, knowing how to effectively forge and manage these relationships while maintaining mission integrity is a critical key to success. This workshop breaks down the process, providing clear education and actionable insights into the three core phases of strategic partnership development: Sourcing, Architecting, and Integrating.

With a focus on practical application through real-world case studies and proven frameworks, you'll engage directly with an expert who has personally led organizations through mergers and expertly facilitated numerous successful projects, showing you precisely how to:

● Source potential partners: Proactively identify, discover, evaluate, and connect with ideal partners aligned with your strategic vision, and manage the risks that come with size differences, reputational challenges, and complex challenges.

● Architect the deal: Facilitating and structuring the entire deal process, including drafting Letters of Intent, conducting thorough due diligence (including assessing funding threats), developing robust communication plans, mastering negotiation techniques, and navigating other vital steps.

● Integrate the organizations: Preparing for critical pre-closing activities and effectively bringing two organizations together to ensure the ability to manage at a larger scale, leverage synergies, preserve mission integrity, and effectively bring cultures together.

Leave this workshop prepared to initiate, manage, and integrate strategic partnerships that drive significant value for your organization. Transform your approach to strategic collaboration and confidently navigate the path to successful, value-driven partnerships.

Key Outcomes

Participants will be able to develop a holistic approach to strategic partnerships that ensures synergy, mitigates risks, and maximizes long-term value for their organization.

Participants will be able to apply a "Sourcing Checklist" to screen potential allies for reputational fit and strategic vision.

Participants will be able to identify "funding threats" and develop a robust pre-closing communication plan that maintains stakeholder trust.

Participants will be able to develop a strategy to leverage post-merger synergies and manage the complexities of bringing two distinct staff cultures together under a unified mission.
