Changes In Nonprofit Employment Law

Presented by Alex Booker of Commonlight Legal

for Martha's Vineyard Nonprofit Collaborative

Tuesday June 9th, 10 - 11:30 am

Please join us for this webinar intended to provide the most current enforcement activity and compliance risks for MA nonprofits.

During this session, we will review:

  • MA’s new Wage Transparency Law, which took effect last October and requires certain employers to disclose salary ranges in job postings (the AG is already issuing fines and citations on this);

  • Navigating anti-discrimination laws and the Federal government’s anti-DEI posture;

  • Worker misclassification under MA’s strict ABC test, which routinely catches nonprofits off guard with consultants and program contractors;

  • Several other high-frequency employment law topics for Mass nonprofits

Attendees will receive a self-audit checklist to use after the session.

    Presenter: Alex Booker advises nonprofits on employment, contractor, and volunteer compliance; advocacy and lobbying rules; and outside general counsel services. He brings a perspective rare in nonprofit law: he has seen employment disputes from every side of the table, supporting federal administrative adjudicators, litigating on behalf of employees and unions, and advising a Federal agency on ethics.

    His firm, Commonlight Legal, traces its roots to Nonprofits Counsel, a solo nonprofit law practice started in 2021. Since then, Commonlight Legal has grown into a multi-practice firm serving mission-driven organizations, charter schools, independent schools, and nonprofits across four jurisdictions.
